Corns and callous
Corns and callous develop as a result of pressure and friction caused by toe deformities, incorrect gait or poorly fitted shoes. A podiatrist can relieve your discomfort by painlessly removing the hard skin that forms the callous. We can also give you some advice to help prevent the problem from recurring.
Some ways to prevent corns and callous include:
- Wearing correctly fitted footwear
- Practising good foot hygiene
- Applying moisturiser regularly
- Regular podiatry treatments
- Wearing padding
- Custom orthotics
Foot pain
We spend a lifetime on our feet and we expect them to perform pain-free. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
We don’t realise how important our feet are until something starts to hurt. Some common problems include:
- Corns on the toes, between the toes, or under the foot
- Ingrown toenails due to incorrect cutting, misshapen toes, or incorrect footwear
- Warts
- Pain in the arch (“plantar fasciitis”)
- Heel pain
- Sore joints and arthritis
Some of these conditions can become chronic problems if they are left untreated. If you come to us for an assessment, we can develop a treatment plan and give you some advice on correct management.
Heel pain
Heel pain is one of the most common problems we see at our practice. It presents as a sharp pain that appears after rest, for example, when you first get up in the morning.
Our podiatrists can give you advice to help relieve this pain.
Treatment options may include:
- Strapping
- Custom orthotics
- Stretching exercises
Children
Children can experience problems as they walk and grow, including flat feet, in toeing, tripping, toe walking or simple “growing pains.” They may also have problems with stubborn warts and ingrown toenails.
If your child has been complaining of pain in their feet, knees or legs (or if you have a family history of these conditions), this could be an indication of something that will develop into an ongoing problem.
Many of these conditions can be assessed and managed very easily if you come to see us. We advise you on correct treatment, good footwear and, if necessary, orthotics.
Senior foot care
We all need healthy feet to enjoy sport, travel and other everyday activities. It is especially important for seniors to stay mobile in order to avoid other medical problems.
As we get older, our feet may become less flexible as a result of arthritis or old injuries. Seniors may also experience:
- Difficulty cutting their toenails
- Poor circulation
- Corns and callous under the ball of the foot – due to thinning of the natural fatty pad that protects it
- Corns and callous on the toes as a result of incorrect footwear, clawed toes, or deformity created by arthritis
Our podiatrists can provide a general treatment to cut your toenails and remove corns and callous. Regular treatments can also improve discomfort caused by thickened nails.
We are always happy to advise you on footwear and general care at home.
Orthotics
Orthotics can help to support your feet, improve your gait and reduce pain or pressure in your feet and lower legs. They may also help you prevent recurring sports injuries in your knees or ankles.
Orthotics that you purchase “over the counter” may be comfortable, but ultimately they won’t provide the support and correction, that is necessary to fully address most of these problems. This is because they may not match the width of your foot or the contour of your arch and only give minimal correction.
Our podiatrists can produce orthotics that are prescribed for your feet. Custom orthotics will give you the support and correction you need for the best results.
If you think you might need orthotics, our services include:
- A full assessment of your problem
- General footwear advice
- custom-made orthotics produced from a plaster cast or scan of your feet
- A treatment plan with follow-up appointments to make any necessary adjustments
Diabetic foot care
Regular podiatry treatment is highly recommended for diabetic patients. Monitoring your circulation is an important way to prevent further complications.
Podiatry treatment can address:
- Circulation
- Skin problems
- Numbness
- Pressure areas
- Foot function
Our podiatrists will assess the blood-flow in your feet using a Doppler ultrasound machine. The machine produces a printout that we keep in your records. This quick and easy process allows us to monitor your results on an annual basis, or as often as required.
We also provide general treatment if you’re developing painful corns or struggling to cut your own toenails.
Footwear
Incorrect footwear can cause pain, callous, corns, blisters and ingrown toenails.
You should replace your shoes if you notice excessive wear on the sole or upper. Sports shoes should be replaced if the tread or the midsole is worn, or if they’re no longer giving you good support and cushioning.
We are always happy to provide you with footwear advice.
